DEPUTATION TO THE PREMIER.

THE CHINESE QUESTION.

THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT BILL,

CONTAGIOUS DISEASES,

Wellington, this day. A deputation from the Municipal Conference waited on the Premier today, presenting the resolution* which were passed by the Conference. Replying, tho Premier said as to tho Chinese difficulty. the Government was already moving "in that direction, bub he thought local authorities should have power to deal with Chinese quarters. Referring to tho request for power to order the isolation of contagious disease, he bhoughb they should go further, and take steps to insist on the isolation of some contagious diseases which should be reported by medical men to the Board of Health. This Government, he said, could nob drop bhe Local Government Bill bo take up the Municipal Corporation Consolidation Act, as members were desirous that the former should be made perfect as Boon as possible, and then placed before the people. The existing system of representation of boroughs was highly unsatisfactory, in facb was scarcely representation ab all, and the Governmenb were debermined to have ie altered. Ie was, he bhought, necessary al*?o to reduce tbe number of boroughs. Mr Seddon promised careful consideration of tbe resolutions, and promised to give effect to them where consistent with the wishes of the people.
