ADDRESS FROM QUEEN MAKEA.
A POLITICAL SPEECH. The following is a translation of a curious address which was presented by. Queen Makea Ariki (who visited New Zealand some years ago), one of the three great chief tainessea of the Island of Rarotonga :— "These are the words of Makea Ariki to Lord Glasgow: These are the words used at the coronation of all tha Ariki of Xvv-
tonga, E Toro,, let all people know a new head hae come to our land; placo him in a high position under the heavens. This is Tavake Ariki, of Auarotu-ki-teßangi, who took to "wife Tapaeru-nui-ma-ei-Rangi, to whom m son was born Named Kiritia Ariki, Maeva ! Hurrah ! Kiritia, 0 Kiritia! Who took to wife Papa, te whom was born Ts Uira (the Lightning), and'Te Aa 0 from whom Mtikeu Ariki is descended, an Ariki of great power and influence ov«ir tbt people. Maewa 1 Hurrah ! Receive him, O Tumu, receive him, 0 chiefs and people I Papa, Atoa and Akaotu receive him ! Tha two-peaked mountain Tamanga also receive him. Their sacred maraes are Arp-i-te-Touga, . Fureora, Muriwui, and-Marae-Karba. Hearken, O Makea, hearken O priests! Keep your foot) on the land and you aie eat'e; if you go to the mountains you are only ariki of the birds; if you go to sea you "tire only ariki of the fish ; remain ; remain on the land then, and bo. Ariki of Tuniaro-Kumi, Tumaro-Anija, Te-keu-nui, and the toro of lo Roraru. Welcome ! 0 Governor, representative of our Queen Victoria ! Come and stand, on my-shoulders, and on the foundation laid by Tane, which will never be shaken. Let the seed now be planted in tha land that ib may grow like a straight au tree 1—• Makea Ariki."
