THE CABLE QUESTION.
Melbourne, this day.
Sir Gavan Duffy agrees with the proposals of the South Australian Government with regard to the cable question and the tieatment of non-subscribing colonies. It is understood that the Government requests contributors in signing the necessary documents to submit to the Eastern Extension Company that the colonies of New Zealand and Queensland should jointly be asked to pay the present cable rates so long as they do not participate in the guarantee, or that they should send and receive cablegrams at the reduced tariff on the understanding that the amount charged on each cablceram so transmitted be increased at the expense of their respective Governments to a charge equal to the existing rates.
