THE SCULLING CHAMPIONSHIP OF THE WORLD.
HANLAN THE WINNER
LATER DESPATCH
HANLAN PLAYED WITH TRICKETT,
SKtiPOM has so much interest been taken in an English oventasinthegreatsculling match for the Championship of the World, between Hanlan, the Canadian oarsman, and Trickett, the Australian Champion and holder of the Championship of the World by virtue of his victory over Sadler. All classes, not excepting the ladies, were in a state of expectancy, and large sums ot money hung on the result, the betting being influenced in no small degree by national sympathies— the Australians, to a man, backing Trickett, and the Americans going with equal unanimity for the Canadian. We had made special arrangements for a direct cablegram giving the result to be despatched the instant the race was over. The match was fixed for half-past one o'clock yesterday (Monday). Allowing for delays and the time occupied by the race, we may suppose that our message giving the result would be put into the London ollice at about two o'clock in the afternoon, Greenwich time. This, according to Auckland time, would bo a quarter to two this (Tuesday) morning. At 10.34 our message was forwarded from the New Zealand cable station to Auckland, reaching us in sixteen minutes, namely, at 10.50, or in ten miuutes under nine hours from London, A Stab extra was issued at onco, anticipating all others by some hours, as follows :—
SPECIAL CABLW TO " STAR.
LONDON, Monday.
The great sculling match between Trickett and Hanlan took place to-day (Monday) for tho chumpiouship of the world.
Hanlan won the race easily,
We believe the time occupied by our message from London is the shortest on record? Special urgent rates were resorted to at every stage where practicable.
