PIG SHOOTING CASE.

(To the Editor of the Ea'exixg Star.) Sir,—A curious decision was arrived at in tho R.M. Court, Mercer, yesterday. Tho plaintiff sued the defendant for £G. the estimated A-alue of a certain pig, aged nine months. The ovidence shewed that the pig had been shot for trespassing on the defendant's property, and in fact the defendant admitted the act. Thoro only remained, therefore, to haA-a eAddence as to the value of the animal. A gentleman doposodthat he had known the mother of the pig, and that she was a valuable ono.butkneAvnofactsas to the one that had been killed. The Court decided in fa\-or of the plaintiff for £1 10s. and costs, and apparently did not consider the admitted fact that the plaintiff had used the meat of the slain animal for his own use. Had this been credited to the defendant, it should have reduced the judgment by about, £2 or more. By inserting this you will put before the public the true state of the case, aud oblitrf, yours, &c„ Mercer, May 10,1577. Justice.

Sir,—There appears to be an aAvf ul lot of the Simon Pure about the Auckland baker 3; as if they all had been making brf>ad from flour equal! to Avhat is now quoted at £22 peri ton, inamsuch as their calculations appear to be all made on that assumption. Noav, sir, I am prepared to subscribe 10s towards a £50 premium that I Avould propose should be subscribed through yourselves, and offered to any baker Avho should be found bold enough to engage to proA'o that he had used up nothing inferior than that quotation for the last twelve months, excepting some 3 or i. I say fearlessly the assertion and calculation are simply nothing less than an indignity thrown into the face of honest bread consumers. avlio knoAV as Avell as they do that the assumption that such quality of flour only has been used is a piece of the sheerest effrontery. The Avhole thing reminds one forcibly of the time when Dr Lcthby Avas about to report before a commission of the British House of Commons on the bread of London—being inundated Avith samples for same—he decided to send adAdces to all—that no baker's bread Avould be reported on except those who would give guarantee to pay £50 to any institution he might name, if at any, future time bread different, to sample, was A'ended and out of bakers for 4 million consumers, there As'eretwo! bold enough togivc security in accordAvith his offer !—Constant Reader.

P.S.—I Avould like to ask the bakers if all the bread they sold was paid for, what price AA-ould pay then?

PffWe have receiA"ed from Mr Grubb, too late for insertion to-day, a letter, questioning our "Wellington telegram. This is unavoidably held OA'er till Monday, together with our report on four loaA res. left by Mr Grubb, representing his own 5d,. and Mr Woodward's -B-d bread. Both will duly appear in our next issue.]
