It is greatly to be desired that members of Council will curb theirj exuberant patriotism, and allow the Estimates to pass before the holidays. The practice of unauthorised expenditure should receive no encouragement, and yet such must occur if the passing of the Appropriation Bill is postponed. There are one or two bills of pressing importance, notably, those on Education, the Highways, and Liceusing, which should bo passed without delay. But we think the public is fairly warranted in deprecating any needless delay in the passing of the Estimates by the tabling of matters which, however important intrinsically, and in the estimation of their movers, can afford to wait till after the recess.

Wo would respectfully suggest that during the holidays, the officers of the Galatea, and Clio should throw those magnificent vessels open to the public. We are aware that no difficulty is placed in the way of visitors to the Galatea when proceeding thither any afternoon ; but a public notification that for one or two days the public en masse would be welcomed, would be accepted as a very kindly, and characteristic act from our Imperial defenders.

" I want to know, you know," is the privileged right of every legislator. Accordingly Mr. Gordon wants to know from the Provincial Secretary if certain sheep smothered at Newmarket have been eaten in Auckland. We presume the head of the Government should know everything, and we recommend that he should be labelled " enquire within."

Feebiasoxey.—"We are requested to state that it is Brother Porter, not Parker, who was installed as Tyler of the Lodge Waitemata on Monday evening. Brother Porter's services as Tyler to the Lodges held at the Masonic Hotel, date almost from " time immemorial," and it would be contrary to Masonic usage to deprive him of his office while he continues so faithfully to discharge his duties. The first trip of the favourite Royal Alfred, after her overhaul, and thorough refit, will be made to-morrow to the Thames. We have no doubt that many a one will welcome back the Royal Alfred to the Thames trade, and that she will enjoy the same popularity that has always attended the pretty little steamers We would call the attention of the trade to the extensive sale of seasonable drapery, hosiery, clothing, _c., by Messrs. £. and 11. Isaacs" to-morrow. The goods to be offered are just newly landed, having been sent out expressly for this market. ' Mr. 11. P. Cohen, of the Cash Palace, has a new advertisement this evening offering all kinds of goods at extremely low prices. We refer our readers to the advertisement in another column.

Sermons will bo preached this evening at the Pitt-street Wesleyan school-room, by the Rev. F. I. Isitt, and at High-street schoolroom, by the Hey. J. J. Lewis. Notice was given in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre on Sunday that the Bishop of Auckland would hold a special service this (Wednesday) evening, at 7 p.m., for the institution of the Incumbent, the .Rev. Benjamin T. Dudley, to the charge of the newly constituted parish, in accordance with the rules of the Synod. Several of the clergy of neighbouring Churches will be present.
