Drunkenness.—Edwin Leathart, Joseph ; iiarper, and Robert Condrosswere each fined in the usual manner for this offence. Obtaining Goods Under False Pretences, —John James Jackson was charged by Silvester Percy with having obtained from him goods to the value of 275. Silvester Percy, sworn, stated that the prisoner came to his house, the Court-house Hotel, Grahamstown, on the 19th October, and represented himself to be a partner with Mr. I)undas, of the United States Dining Rooms, and it was on this representation that I trusted him. On his leaving, he gave me an order on Mr. Dundas for the amount due to me. This order was afterwards dishonored. — Chirles Dundas was next called, and stated, I had no partners in my business in October last. The prisoner was in my employment as cook. He left about the 17th October.— (The Court here adjourned for a quarter of an hour.) —Mr. Dundas recalled and examined by Mr. Hesketh (who appeared for the prisoner) : I had no reason whatever to complain of his honesty. If I could have seen the man at the time the order was presented I would have paid it for him.—This concluded the ease, and the Bench sentenced the prisoner to one month's imprisonment with hard labor.
