POLICE COURT.— Monday.

Justices.) D-TTNKENNESS.—James Jack, John Jones, and Charles Carroll, were each fined 5s and costs, or to be imprisoned 24 hours.—David. Williams, and John Tackbury, were each fined 10s and co. ts, or to be imprisoned 48 hours, for a second offence. James Neatson, for being a third time drunk, fined 20s and to be imprisoned 7 days. Vagbancy.—Bridget Gardiner was charged with having no lawful visible means of support. —Mr. Joy for defendant. After some evidence was received as to the character of the woman and her house, it was arranged that the case should be dismissed on the consideration that within a week she leaves the place. Impounding Act.—W. Eastdown, for allowing horses, and Charles Burns, John McMahon, and Mary Peak, for allowing goats to stray, were each fined 5s and costs. Assaulting the Police.—John Burns, William Donnelly; and Elizabeth Lynch, were charged with assaulting the police in the execution of their duty, -r- Constable Jeffrey. deposed, on Saturday evening at 6 o'clock I went to the^oext house in Barrack-street. The woman came out and knocked my hat off. On my going in to arrest the woman, Lynch struck me and Burns tore my coat from top to bottom, and Donley assisted in preventing the arrest. The language was very obscene as proceeding from the house and heard all over the street. Donnelly subsequently assisted to restrain the woman from assaulting me. For the defence, Joseph Roberts was examined, but could only state what he did not see. Burns and Lynch were sentenced each to two months imprisonment, and Donnelly to one month, all with hard labour. Bbeach op Municipal Police Act. —The prisoner Burns was recalled, and charged with having torn the coat of 'Constable Jeffrey, value £2 12s 6d.—Constable Jeffrey proved the facts, and exhibited the damage done. — The man was ordered to pay £2, or to be imprisoned for one month with hard labour. Chabge oe Feaudulent Convebsion. — The warrant having arrived from Dunedin for Mr. H. D. Maddock, he was, on the application pf Mr. Broham, remanded to that place, the bail being received for his appearance there, viz., his own bond for £100, and two sureties of £200 each.
