The Evening Star. SATURD A Y, AUGUST 20, 1870.

The p.s. Duke of Edinburgh will leave for Thames on Monday morning, at 6 o'clock for the convenience of persons wishing to attend the land sale at Messrs. Cochrane and Son's.

A poor woman named Eves, of Woolwich, the wife of H. Eves, a gardener, in the employ of H. H. Church, Esq., architect, has just given birth to three children, a boy and two girls, and under the care of Dr. Batler both the mother and her interesting " little strangers" are doing exceedingly well. Considerable interest has been shown in the welfare of the poor woman and triplets, and the Ecv # Canon Brown, the rector of Woolwich, it is said, has written to her. Crracious Majesty to claim the ■ Queen's bounty for the happy mother. The father of this prolific family is very* much respected, and has been in his present situation over 20 year 3. There are two other children in the family aged three and

nine years respectively.

A billiard match, between Mr. W- B. Pierce, manager of the Victoria Billiard-room, Menziea' Hotel, Victoria-street., and Mr. Joseph Gallagher will take place at the above room, at 8 p.m. this evening. Parties interested in the noble game of billiards will do well to be present, as some fine play is anticipated.

The Glassbowers had a very fair attendance last night notwithstanding the downpour of rain we had, wh en Mr. and Mr3. Woodroof went through their exhibition. The conun drums were postponed until this evening, when, no doubt, there will be a larger number sent in. An extensive number of presents will be freely distributed to-nighfc, so, with fine weather, we have no doubt but that there will be a very good attendance.

To-night another " Star Company" opens tho Theatre Royal, and judging from the names of the company, ought to be strong enough to draw any house. We think they are taking a step in the right direction, by. only playing light comedies and burlesques. We wish them success and " fine weather."

To connoisseurs in horology we would recommend arr inspection of a very curious and beautiful watch just imported by Mr. Howdeu, watchmaker, of Queenstreefc. It is a Geneva, and exhibits the curious skill of that city of watchmakers. It is keyless, having all its winding and adjusting gear self-contained. It is intended to he proof against dust and injury of every kind, nob requiring to be. opened oven for an examination of its internal arrangements, a strong plate-glass back giving a complete view of its workings. We know that a prejudice exists against so-called Geneva watches, owing to the majority imported into England under that name being from Neufchateli where tbey are made by peasants, who1 turn them out in enormous numbers in their hours of leisure: frdm agricultural operations but it is well-known to travellers that in G-eneva, and generally over the Continent, no watches from any country is considered to compare with a real Geneva. The watch alluded to is genuine, and- is really beautiful as well as carious. -^c understand that H. N. Warner, Esq., is to reoaive the appointment of Official Agent. There can be no doubt the appointment will give universal satisfaction,'

* /tke drawing for the4ieautHfti£-oil painting j of the Art Union will fcato place on Monday •next. TWtj .suje-a few.'ipphefcß ufcill uu haad. Dr. Bell, -who. anfeS^-h^t-e with the livst batch of NoncomforsHs.fe,Vclied suddenly at Port 'Albert, on the. J^yv'ms^,,' causing a an'ik versa! feeling of regret amc/Ugsfc the, settlors. I

We are requested by Messrs. Samuel Cochrane and Son to direct attention to the valuable freehold and otlier property, at Graham:town and Tararu, which they will offer for unreserved sale on Monday next.—[Advt.]

We have been requested to state that the drawing for the beautiful oil paintings of the Art Union, which haa been got up by Messrs. Varley and Bartlett, will take place on Monday next. There are still a few tickets to be disposed of, and as the pictures to be drawn for are really very beautiful specimens of the painter's art, and handsomely framed, we have no doubt that the few tickets still remaining on hand will be taken up before the drawing comes on.

A grand amateur gymnastic and vocal entertainment will be given by the members of the Auckland Gymnastic Club at the Parnell Hall, assisted by the Naval Fife and Drum Band and others, for the benefit of the Tauranga Belief Fund, on Thursday next.

A meeting of the shareholders of the Mariner's Eeef Gold Mining Company is advertised for the Bth proximo. A call of 7s. 6d. has been made in this company.

Notice is given that Allan Christy has become insolvent. Meetings of creditors aye advertised to be held in the estates of Andrew Austin and James McShane. All claims against L. J. Bennett's estate must be sent in to Mr. Ewington within three days.

We observe that Mr. B. W. Dyson, of 220, Queen-street, advertises that Thursday next is fixed as the Show-day for New Spring Drapery and Novelties, just arrived, and invites inspection.—[Advt.]

The Thames Advertiser warns business people and others that spurious coins are in circulation at the Thames. We were last night shown a very good imitation of a halfcrown, bearing the date 1846, which it would require much careful examination to detect A gentleman, who had received it in change, passed it at the theatre, where it was after some time detected by the doorkeeper, who called the gentleman's attention to it. The latter at once returned to the house from which he had taken it in change, but they were unable to recollect from whom they had procured it. It will be necessary to exercise caution in examining change, as doubtless there are more of these coins in circulation.

The officers and men of the p.s. Williams have subscribed the sum of £7 9s. towards the Tauranga Belief Fund.
