A sermon was preached on Sunday evening last, by the Eev. W. Davies, M.A., in the Albert-street Congregational Church, in reference to the late serious calamity of the s.s. Tauranga, when the collection for the evening—amounting to £19 4s—was made for the widows and orphans left destitute by this calamity. .Notice is given by the Chairman of the City Board, in reference to the removal of dust from private premises by the carts of the Board.
A call of one shilling per scrip has been made in the (Sylvia Company, and a call of ten shillings per share has been made in the Tookey Quartz Mining Company.
POLICE COURT.— Wednesday. (Before J. Naughton and J. Dilworth, Esqs., Justices). DBTJNKENNESS. J James, for drunkenness, was fined 5s and costs, or to be imprisoned 24 hours with hard labor. MUNICIPAL POLICE ACT. W Marshall, for allowing two goats and three kids to wander in Victoria Quadrant, on the sth August, was fined 5s and costs or to be imprisoned for 24 hours with hard labor. E. West, for leaving his vehicle unattended in Queen-street, on August 3, was fined 20s and costs, or to be imprisoned 7 days. P. Dowd, for allowing three cows to wander in Upper Queen-street, was fined 5s and costs, .or to be imprisoned 24 hours with hard labor. , T. Jones was charged by the Inspector of Nuisances with neglecting to keep clean his backyard, in Chapel-street, on 3rd August. Mr. Wynn for complainant. T. Young, Inspector of Nuisances, deposed to the place being in a very filthy state ; that there was no drainage, and that the overflow passed into the neighbouring yards. This evidence was corroborated by J. Dean, residing next door, who stated that his family were unable to reside in the lower part of his house in consequence. Defendant was fined £1 and costs, or to be imprisoned 7 days. THREATENING- LANGUAGE. A charge against James Q-rant of having used threatening language to Eliza Smith was withdrawn. The Court then rose.
