It appears from tho following report which has been forwarded to. us, that the barque Canterp-,i iwhich. left Auckland a, few days since, >"to: load ; timber at 'Hbkianga for Mel- ': tbourne.'has had a'narrbw escape of being lost. The barque, having .taken in her cargo, left Hokianga on Monday last, in charge of the pi.'ot. Captain Beveridge, crossing the bar with iv light westerly breeze. The night-was very dirty, with thick rain, and Captain Stewart kept well off the land till the following morning. At daybreak there wag a light breeze off the land, and the barque was seen about seven miles off land, having parted from her anchor during the night. 'Xlie Mary Ann ran down to her, and found her abandoned. Captain Stewart placed two of bis men on board, who worked her tip towards Hokiangn. When within two miles of the bar, Captain Beveridge and the crew of,the pilot-boat came on board, and by request of Captain Ste^rr, undertook to #ork the barque to this port, one of Capt. Stewart's hands lrmaiuiug on board in possosnion of the vessel, in order to make good claim for salvage. Captainjßeveridge ; hay,ing been supplied with Bouio charts and other necessaries, proceeded for Auckland, and may be expected to arrive in harbour hourly. Tho Mary Ann crossed the bar the saino day, and shortly after landjing Captain Stewart proceeded overland to the Bay of .Islands, arriving there on Thursday.. Ho camo oh to Auckland by the s.s.
