To the Editor of the Evening Stab. Sib, —Averse as I am to enter into a newspaper controversy, I cannot injustice to myself allow the statements made at the meeting of S. H. Smith's creditors, that I " had pledged myself to be there and make a statement," go uncontradicted ; it is simply untrue. Had I been aware that Mr. Smith's debt to me was to be made the subject of comment, I certainly should at any inconvenience to myself have baen present, which, I am sure, would have been sufficient to close the mouths of those who so bravely and gentlemanly attacked me behind my back. When invited, on Saturday afternoon, to be present at this meeting, I stated, .' O yes, I suppose so." | And this is falsely stated to be " a pledge to be there and make a statement," a thing I never intended to do, as any statement I have made I am prepared to substantiate, at the j same time I do not feel called upon to prove j all the - exaggerated statements manufactured j for me, to suit the ends of the promulgators.
