AEEIVAL OF THE
'COMERANG.'
HAUHAUS IN DISTRESS.
SIX PERISH IN THE SNOW.—OTHERS
MISSING,
TONGARISO IN A STATE OF EEUPTION.
By the arrival of the Comerang, from Napier, we are placed in possession of files to the sth instant-. Most cf the news has been anticipated. Makarini and his followers, of the Uriwera, have capitulated, and several dead bodies of rebels have been found in the snow ; others are missing. All the Uriweras are hiding themselves. The Haivke's Bay Herald of the sth inst. says : —" Tongariro continues in a state of violent eruption, throwing up large stones, and emitting flame, visible after nightfall. But the most remarkable fact connected with these phenomena is that they are accompanied by great noises, distinctly heard at intervals in the neighbourhood of "Napier, probably 80 miles disLant, and resembling the sound of a distant cannonade. The noises in question were at once put down to the proper cause, but, lest there should be any mistake, we availed ourselves of the courte3y of S. Locke, Esq., R.M., for the Taupo district, who telegraphed to Tapuaeharuru, and received a reply confirmatory of the facts we have stated, but adding that the burning mountain has been cloud-capped for the last few days."
