MR. FRANK TOWERS' BENEFIT.
To the Editor of the Evening Star,
Sir, -In reference to the above occasion on last evening, we wish to give the public some explanation of the perforn ance. When Mr. Towers solicited the services of the Tradesmen's Garrick Club, they expressed their willingness to assist for his benefit conditionally, viz., that Air. Towers, wou d take upon himself the whole management of the pieces, &c., connected, to be played. In this he, Mr. Towers, signally failed to do ; viz., in supplying.'" professional ladies of the drama," who were not up in their parts, and thus throwing the whole affair into confusion. In the next place there were several new scenes required, which would have materially tended to the success of the piece., which were entirely neglected ; also to supply properties which were not forthcoming, and the scene-shifting was entirely left to the management of a lad about fifteen years of age ; also the office of prompter Mr. Towers took upon himseif, which he very much ne glectel, by attending more to the personal comforts of his friends than to his duties as prompter. In such a predicament it would be impossible for any amateur club to do justice to the pieces played. Li reference to the farce, the members of the Club were well up in their parts, but through one of the ladies absenting herself, through a cause which we refrain from mentioning, it was impossible to conclude ; and when the aud ence called upon Mr. Towers for his local song, said gentleman was nm est from the conclusion of the interlude. Hoping we have not trespassed too much upon your valuable space, Mr. Editor, allow us to remain, yours respectfully, E. H. Percy, Manager T.G.C. J. Beck, Secretary T.G.C. Auckland, N. Z., July Ist, 1870.
