NARROW ESCAPE OF THE CREW".
Information was received in town this morn-, j ing by Alessrs. Archard and Brown, o* MeeAi/iics' Bay, that one of their cutters, ih n Ay- had gone ashore just the A' - »-.'.. of the Sandspit. The master in* • ' the owners that the cutter went on • ■__ a. very heavy gale of wind, ..." ..as blowing on Wednesday nib" and while the vessel was on he; -',-y . from Auckland to the Thau.-3. Every exertion was made to haul her to a lee shore but without avad,.the gale was too strong for her to claw off, and notwithstanding every effort made by the master, she was dashed upon the rocks with great violence, doing considerable injury to her sides and bottom. The master and other persons on board saved themselves with great difficulty, and on getting ashore they very wisely proceeded to make themselves comfortable, for the night, after securing the vessel to the best of their ability. On receipt of the intelligence the owners of the Spey immediately sent off several hands to the spot, with the necessary machinery to try and get, her off. Although considerably injured, it is thought that she may be get off, after being repaired where she now lies.
