POLICE COURT.—THIS DAY.
(Before T. Beckbarn, Esq., R.M.)
HIGHWAY BATES CASE. The Resident Magistrate delivered judgment in the case of Bowen v. Johnson, in which the defendant was charged with, refusal to pay highway rates to the Matakana Highway Board. His Worship stated that in his opinion the plaintiff liad not made out his case, which was accordingly dismissed, with 4s. costs of Court. Mr. Beckham. then left the bench.
(Before W. C. Daldy, Esq., and J. M. Dargaville, Esq., J.P.s. DRUNKENNESS. John Hill, charged with this offence, was sentenced to a fine of ss. and costs, or to be imprisoned for 24 hours' Avith bard labour. Thomas Brown, charged with being drunk and disorderly, was fined 20s. and costs, or to be imprisoned 48 hours' with hard labour. ' Thomas Brown was further charged witli using obscene language in a public place in Freeman's Bay, and pleaded guilty.
Mr. Naughton stated that prisoner «». greatly addicted to this offence, and tHe ben* ordered a fine of 40s. and costs, or seren da*' imprisonment, to commence on completion of the previous term. ' lALSK PBETBNOES. Peter B>. Mackenzie appeared to answer ti charge of obtaining a signature to a promis gor ! note by means of false representations. Mr. MacCormick appeared for the proaeou tion ; Mr. Keafcley for the defendant. The counsel for the prosecution stated that the matter had been arranged between the parties, and the charge would be withdrawn No evidence being adduced, the defendant was discharged. The Court then adjourned. LUNACY.. On the Court resuming, Joseph Gh-a nBW was brought up for lunacy, and on the nwdi. cal evidence of Dr. Lee and Dr. G-oldßbro1" was committed to the Lunatic Asylum, :■;'..
