Twenty-two sections have been taken up at Martins Bay under the settlement clansc. Some excellent rough scaly gold has been found at Big Bay, adjoining Martins Bay. Two men went out prospecting for three days and brought back three pennyweights, They then took another supply of provisions, and went out again. Good gold is also being »ot in a gorge further north. AU were weU at Martin's Bay when I left.— Daily Times, 3lst ult. _!_ A serious fire took place on Tuesday afternoon, on the farm of MJv John Conlan, Otakia. It was discovered by the men enffaeed in threshing, after their return from dinnor, and the fire had then made so great Droeress, that all efforts to check it were Unavailing. About 100 bags of gram were saved, but the remainder, amounting to some 1200 bushels was totally destroyed, as also was the threshing mill, which is said to have been quite new.— lbid. _.___.,. That the Gas Company have not the powei to tear up streets without authority from the Corporation, was decided m the Mayors Court yesterday, when the lessee, who 'as not represented, was fined 10s and costs.Ibid, Ist instant. A new lodge, under the seal of the MD10.0.F., was inaugurated at Jralmerston on the 24th ult., under the name of the Loyal Palmerston Lodge. A number of visiting brethren from Dunedin were present on the occasion, and about twenty members W ere enrolled. The following gentlemen were elected office-bearers for the ensuing 7 ear:—N.G., Bro. Arkle ; V.G., Bro. Longneb; E.S., Bro. Davidson; and Treasurer, Bro. Longuet. — Ibid.
