A fire, by which a weather-board house was burnt to (ho ground, and a lot of property destro\ed, took place about 10 o'clock on Monday night, on the Sink to i .ise claim, Moanatairi. ° The house was inhabited by two shareholders of the Sink to Rise, one of whom was at work in a drive at tbe tiuw the accident occurred. The man who was in the house left and went to his mat;-in the drive for a candle, nt the same time leaving a lighted one on the table. He left the door open, and the draft of air communicated the flame with a canvas partition, which communicated it to the rest of the hpuse. The man remained for som. time with his mate, and ou coming out observed the house in fumes. He at once rushed to the spot, and saved a suit of clothes—the only thing that was saved. One of the men lost property to the value of £30, and the loss of the second was almost as heavy. There were two watches destroyed and ulso some money, besides a couple of cheques. The number and amounts of the latter are known, so that these are not included in tbe computed loss. The men were well known as steady, industrious miners.— Thames Advertiser.
