London, May 18

Mr Gladstone rallied at 8 o'clock this morning, and is now sleeping. During his sleep to-day he was heard to whisper the opening words of the Lord's Prayer and some words in French. The members of the household, together with the servants, took their farewells, and several touching scenes occurred. Mr Gladstone is now unconscious, and his hands are in a comatose condition.

Four policemen arrested William Foster, a burglar, at St. Pancras, London. Although handcuffed while riding in a cab with his captors, Foster drew a revolver and shot three of the officers, one seriously, and then attempted to commit suicide.

German newspapeis discuss Mr Chamberlain's speech in a respectful and almost sympathetic tone. Washington, May 18.

The action of France in allowing the Spanish fleet to coal at Martinique has caused a feeling of resentment in America. A great league of American ladies who have pledged themselves not to purchase goods of French manufacture has been formed. Hong Kong, May 18. The Governor of the Philippines has instituted a native assembly. It is believed that half the natives will continue favourable to Spain. Enilio Aquinaldo the chief leader of the rebellion in the Philippines, which was ended in December last by the Spanish buying off the leaders and deporting them to Hong Kong, has left Hong Kong for the Philippines to lead a native attack upon Manila. He is accompanied by seventeen rebel chief who were deported with him. Madrid, May 18. Senor Sagasta has been successful in "reforming the Cabient. General Costilla, formerly second in command in the Philippines, assumes control of foreign affairs. Paris, May 18 The French Government has increased the duties upon products imported from Ameaica, especially frozen and canned meats. In connection with the French elections, the defeat of M.M.
