INTERPROVINCIAL TELEGRAMS.

(Per Press Agency.)

Auckland, July 24,

A cablegram from London notifies that a patent has been granted by the Grand Lodge to Bro G. S. Graham, as District Grand Master, E.G., for Auckland Provincial District. Taupo, July 24. Several sharp shocks of earthquajg were felt here last night. The first, at 4 p.m., was particularly severe and prolonged. The direction of the earth-wave was north-east. Dunedin, July 24. '■ The jury in the case Pritchard V Corporation of'Dunedin, an action for

£6000, for damages sustained by reason of the negligent formation of Canongate street, were locked up last night, and discharged this morning as they could not agree upon a verdict.

Auckland, July 24. (from times own correspondent). ,'iLast night, as Mr. George Brown, Gisborne, was turning off the boiling water from the painkiller bath Rotorua, the back of the cauldron gave way, and he slipped in up to his neck. Being alone, he had sufficient presence of mind to make his way as fast as possible into the township of Ohinemuri. On stripping him, the greater portion of his skin came off, and he is now in a very critical state. Mr. Brown is brother to Mr. E. K. Brown, lately residing in the Waikato district. - At Rotorua, on Tuesday last, a fowl was cooked for a sick Moari child, but being too ill to eat it, the fowl was left in an iron pot until Sunday last, when it was partaken of by a party often persons. During Sunday night they all became ill, but thinking nothing of it, did not ask European assistance. On Monday morning, a lad 12 years of age, who had eaten the fowl, died. Another, a girl, died last night, but the rest are recovering, which is due to the exertions of Captain Gilbert Mair, who procured the assistance of Dr. Walker and Surgeon Campbell, from Taupo, who have the patients unde their charge. On Thursday last, a settler named Leetin, residing at Pukekaooroo, was engaged ploughing and burning some rubbish on a field. Several of his children were playing in the same field, and a strong wind was blowing at the time. A girL four and a half years old went too near the fire, and her dress caught light. Before assistance could be rendered, she was terribly roasted. She never appeared to suffer pain, and remained conscious up to a few minutes before death, which took place 20 hours after the accident.
