Maggie Baker, a well known character here, who was pointedly referred to in the Reformer newspaper last week, called at the office this morning, and belaboured. Hooper, the Editor, with a riding whip,, then jumped mto a cad, and drove off. The Post understands that three actions for libel are about being instituted against the Reformer Newspaper Company, also three against the New Zealand Times Company for giving publicity to the same, by allowing the said libels to be printed at their ohice. The adjourned Temperance Conference last night was an utter failure. The Rev Mr. Patterson described its labours as ending in smoke. It is to sit again next Monday, bnt is hoc likely to be well attended. Wellington, July 12. Argus says it is rumoured Government will try ;\iid get subsidy voted next session for mail to Fiji, if sufficient amount to induce Union Company to undertake contract, in which probably Company will purchase Hinemoa from Government, and employ her in the service. Post says Hinemoa is to be laid up, as there is nothing for her to do. feYDNEY, July 12. In the Assembly yesterday, the question of Pacific service cropped up. Parkes thought better arrangement might be made. Present Government thought they must either let service drop altogether, or adopt coarse into which late Postmastcr-Generai has led them.
