Sydney, March 7. The Ringarooma left Melbourne yesterday with the mails. The Government were defeated on a Want of Confidence motion last night. [Per s.s Arawata via Bluff] Melbourne, March 1. Sir Charles M'Mahon has declared Mr. Graham Berry's apology not sufficient, and he has promised a full statement to the Assembly when re-elected, which, however, seems doubtful. Sir Charles Gavin Duffy is the nominee of the Liberal party. Win. Hastings has been found guilty of murdering his wife at Frankestown. The principal evidence in the circumstantial chain against him was that of his own •daughter, aged 15, who deposed to having had improper connection with her own father since she was nine years of age. Prisoner continues to assert his innocence. M'Meckan, Blackwood, and Co. have made important reductions on all passenger rates and freights between Melbourne and all New Zealand ports. Gregor Taylor, the principal electrician and representative of the Cable Company, i 3 a passenger per Arawata. A three years contract has been entered into with M'Meckan, Blackwood and the Tasmanian Government for the conveyance -of mails between Tasmania and New Zealand.
