LITTLE RIVER ROAD BOARD.

The annual meeting of the ratepayers was held at the office in Kaituna, on the 4th January. The following is an abridgement of the report submitted to the meeting :—The balance to the credit of the district on the Ist January, 1876, was£277 14s 9d. The Board have received during the year ending the 31st December, from the Provincial Government, £3917 6s; from the General Government, £224 13s Id ; rates, £362 19s 6cl; miscellaneous, £29 10s 8d ; total from all sources, £4812 48. During the year the Board have expended the following ' sums:—On the Christchurch and Akarda road, £1126 lis. This sum includes a ne\v; bridge in Kaituna, at a cost of something, under £180. Reforming and me tolling 116 chains of road commencing at the\Main Drain bridge Tai Tapu, and in the direction of Christchurch ; total cost, £63015s ; also balance of contract for forming norths point of Sally's Bay, £32 lis lOd ; also, \ £48 15s lOd, quarrying and breaking metal in Little River bush. The sum of £201 16s 7d has been expended in day labour by men living in Government cottages, and £90 in carting timber, metal, and odd jobs. On branch roads the sum of £246 19s Id has been expended, that is, on Lincoln road £113 9s 2d in .repairing and replanking bridge, and reforming and shingling road. On the swamp road passing Hayes, Brims, Gilmour, and others property £68 2s 6d; - also, £24 7s 5d on the Port Lyttelton road, and the remainder in various localities; miscellaneous, £83 3s lid, of this sum £32 4s 5d was spent in clearing drains at Tai Tapu ; Office expenses, including fencing office, maps, advertising, stationery, stamps, and clerk's wages, £191 15s 7d. The total expenditure during the year amounts to the sum of £1794 17s 9d, leaving a.balance to the credit of the dis- . trict on January 1, of £3018 7s 3d. The. contracts generally wore represented as having been let at a low figure, and not as a whole of a remunerative character to contractors. The works at present under contract are as follows:—Shingling 42 chains on Lincoln road, forming 330 chains along the various flats skirting Lake Elleßmere, also quarrying, breaking, and stacking 3500 cubic yards of road metal in different places. The total cost of the above works will be about £1800. It was also reported that the Lake Forsyth is likely to be a continual source of trouble . to the district, the lake being high, and any fresh in the creeks causes it to rise over the road, and a high, wind causes more or less damage. The • report was adopted. The meeting proceeded to elect two members in place of Messrs Buchanan i and Coop. The following were nominated:—Messrs Coop, David Gebbie, H." • N. Tanner, and W. Gilmour. Mr. Buchanan signified his intention not to- present /himself for re-election in consequence of some scurrilous remarks impugning: his honesty, made some time back by a somewhat notorious character who has of late been

making frantic efforts to attract notice, and get into respectable company. It was resolved that Mr. Buchanan retire until tlfe feeling of the meeting be ascertained, with reference to his conduct as a member of, and as chairman to the Board, After a lengthy discussion, in which some not over complimentary remarks were made irT reference to the person alluded to above, it was proposed by Mr Hayes, and seconded by Mr. Leatham, and carried unanimously, " That this meeting.has the most implicit confidence in Mr. Buchanan as a member of the Board." Mr. Buchanan having consented to be nominated, he was proposed and seconded, upon which the names of D. Gebbie, H. N. Tahner,,and W. Gilmour were withdrawn,. and Messrs.; Buchanan and Coop weTe declared re-elected.

A meeting of the .Board was held immediately afterwards. Present—Messrs. Buchanan, Coop, Murray, and Mr. Buchanan was re-rejected chairman, and it was. resolved to hold the meetings as usual on the first Monday in each month. Copies of the Public Health Act were received from Dr. Pollen, chairman of the Central Board of Health. A tender was received from C. Chapman, and accepted, for breaking 100 yards of metal in Caton's Bay. Resolved that'tenders be invited for quarrying, breaking, and stacking 2000 cubic yards of road metal, also that tenders be invited for filling up holes oh the qjain road near the Beach Hotel. Sundry accounts were passed, and the Board adjourned.
