SUGAR FAMINE AVERTED.
SYDNEY, May 23. Mr Knox, in a letter to the Press regarding his cablegram to Java ordering sugar, declares that one cable .message was held up for two days, and as a restdt of the detention the sugar was re-offered at a higher price. He <ould only accept because his company was bound by its arrangement with the New South Wales Government to provide a supply during the shortage period. (Received May 29, 10 a.m.)
SYDNEY, May 29. The Colonial Sugar Company has assured Mr Hall that it has completed purchases of sugar to overcome th< shortage".. A proclamation will be issued on Tuesday*- authorising the seizure oi fodder.
