The Crown Law Department of Victoria has become possessed of a mass of information which contains startling allegations of bench packing and bribery, and that Chinese gamblers had organised to protect themselves, and by bribing had been able to minimise punishment. One celestial swears he was present at a meeting where £2O was subscribed to bribe a justice of the peace. A deputation consisting of lepresniit.itivKs of the London Missionary Society, the Presbyterian Church, and the Wesleyan body, have waited on the Premier of New South Wales to protest ngamst the annexation of the New Hebrides bvFiance, and pointed out that if this took plaoo much injustice would be inflicted on the mi.-sions already, established in the group. It is to be hoped that this opportunity of gaining useful information will be availed of by a large number of farmers. Owing to the cheap fares ruling and the attractions of the Waikato Agricultural and Pastoral Association's show at Claudelands, there has lately been quite an influx of visitors, none of whom will have failed to notice that Ah Bing has commenced business in Victoria-street, and hopes to receive fair amount of public patronage.-(Advt,) Several dangerous places for horsemen are reported as existing on the Raglan road between Waitetunaand the mountain. A great deal of attention has been attracted lately to the studio of Mr W. H. Bartlett, Queen-street, Auckland, by a .large photograph of the celebrated W. 6. Garrard,'the. city " deg-catcher," W. 6, used to be a persistent agitator, a leader of the " disemployed," as he called tbein, and a regular nuisance. To some one there occurred the happy thought of: giving him a billet as city dog ranger. This was dona and the city. lias reaped considerable benefit. The people who forgot to register their dogs, remembered to do so when they discovered that they had been run in, and the streets were cleared of a lot of useless mongrel curs. Mr Bartlett has made a splendid picture of the old man and a dog. There was a very large attendance on Thursday evening,, at the Oddfellows' Hall, Hamilton East, to witness the performance of Miss : Amy Vaughan's Amazons. As on the previous, evening, the audience were vociferous in their applause of the different items', and we can say that in almost every instance this was well meviterl. As a variety show, on a small scale, it was certainly above the average in merit. Miss Amy Vaughan's character sketches were very good, this lady being possessed of considerable talent. As the precocious girl in pinafores,' her performance was very good. Pete Miller, as tainbo, and Harry Thomas, a.' bones, kept the audience lively, their jokes being good and novel. The number which especially calls for notice was the sketch, "Slavery's passed away." Mr Hewson has a good voice, and sang several ballads, which ware fully appreciated by the audience. Miss Di Levy has a good voice and pleasing appearance. Miss Daisey Thornton dances very well, and had to respond to an encore each time she appeared. The performance concluded with a screaming farce, which sent the large audience home satisfied with their evening's entertainment.
