WELLINGTON, October S

With reference to the wreck of the Norwegian steamer Ocean Queen on Makatea. Island, briefly, reported- last night, it appears that the vessel, which was owned by Mr Jacob Christensnn, and commanded by Captain C. Johanlisen, left Papeete on the 15th Septtember for the Island of Makatea .about a hundred and thirty miles to the north of Tahiti, for the purpose of laying moorings lor the Cie Francaise dcs Phosphates de Oceanic. She arrived olf the Island about 10 o'clock the following morning, and whilst proceeding abreast of the reef that stands off the northern coast of the Island the eccentric rod of tbe vessel's engines bent. Before tliey were able to effect repairs and disconnect the rod the vessel was drifting dangerously near the reef. A stiff wind was blowing at the time and after drifting for some distance the steamer at last crashed into the resf. The engines were just started as she struck and were working to order ahead, -but the-ship was already fast on the reef. All the passengers and crew were landed safely, and a,s the Ocean Queen took a heavy list to starboard about 2.30 p.m., the gale having shifted, she was abandoned. At 3 p.m. the large (buoy which she was carrying on the foredeck clipped off the reef and the vessel herself disappeared into 200 fathoms of water. Nothing was saved beyond the boats, and one large mooring buoy which, broke from its lashings, and was Mashed ashore. Mr J. T. Arundel (and party), who is a director of both the French Phosphate Company, and the Pacific Phosphate Company, accompanied by his sister and two daughters, returned to Papeete in the Cholita. The crew was brought down by the auxiliary schooner Susan. Mr Arunel and party, together with the captain and some members of the crew, proceeded to San Francisco by the Mariposa. The chief officer of the Ocean Queen, Mr Schroeder, came to Wellington by the Hauroto, and proceeded to Sydney the Ulimaroa this evening.
