CRETE.

■■ *-. A COUP FRUSTRATED. "United Press Association— By Electric Telegraph — Copyright. (Received May 29, 8.43 a.m.) LONDON, May 28. The protecting Powers have prevented a coup in Crete, -whereby the Chamber intended to proclaim the .island Greek and hoist the Greek colours, thereby hoping that the Powers would acquiesoe z owing'tot/he Balkan troubles. (Crete was conquered by Turkey in 1669, but never really submitted to Turkish rule and continually rose in insurrection against it. After one of these insurrections in 1868 the island obtained a measure of self-go-vernment;, but this not being very satisfactory there was another insurrection in 1877, ana England intervened. Crete then obtained tne "Pact of Halepa," inaugurating an Assembly and a parliamentary regime. In 1889, Turkey withdrew many of the provisions of the "pact," but the discontent that arose amongst the Christians led the Powers, in 1895, to intervene and restore the constitution of Halepa. The Sultan, however, by his agents, nullified thai reforms, and another insurrection followed in 1897, which Greece stepped in to assist against Turkey, and landed a Greek force. This action met with the disapproval of the Powers, and ultimately the Greek troops were withdrawn, the Powers setting up an autonomy, under the nominal suzerainty of the Sultan, but stipulating fox the withdrawal of the Turkish forces. After a Mohammedan outbreak, in which a hundred British soldiers were killed or wounded, land a thousand Christians massacred, the Powers, in 1898, compelled the final withdrawal of the Turkkh troops, and Prince George of Greece was appointed High Commissioner of the island. The is- < land under Prince George's Commissioner- i ship has been fairly peaceful.) <
