The first test match between England and Australia took place to-day, and was won by Australia by thirteen points to three. The weather was fine, and. about 27,000 spectators were present. The- English team, which was the same as played last Saturday, was : — Full-back, Martelli; three-quarters, .Doran, Bucher, \ Nicholls and Adamson; halves, MuUinenx and Cookson ; forwards, Stout, Jarman, M'Gowun, Gibson, Betson, Gray, Ayresmith andFiancpurt.. The Australian team contained six; Queenslanders and nine New South Welshmen, and was: —Full-back, TVt'Cowan (Queensland); three-quarters, White, Row, Spragg; five-eighths, Evans (Queensland) and Ward; half, Gralton (Queensland) ; forwards, Carson, Davis, Marks, Ellis, Kelly, Tanner, Carew and Coltonj the last three being from Queensland. Mr W. G. Garrard, of Christchurch, New ; Zealand, was referee. The Australians outmatched their opponents, who played in worse form than on the previous Saturday. The visitors were slow in getting the ball from the scrum, while in this .point the Australians excelled. Right through the game .the Australians were on the attack. During the first half good defence was shown by the Englishmen, but in the second their defence was very lax. In the second-spell the Australians scored the first try off a freekick which went high and wide of the goal, and 1 Martelli overrunning the ball, Kelly touched down, but Row failed to [convert. In the second spell the Englishmen, by-'a fine series of short passes, carried ;the ball close to their opponents' line,'where the ball went out. From the throw in Nicholls got possession, and by a brilliant dash,; secured a try, which Martelli failed to convert. Australia eight points, Englishmen three. 1 Within five minutes Evans scored another try, and Spragg being again successful, the score stood Australia thirteen points, England three.
