SUDDEN DEATH.

About four o'clock on Saturday afternoon an old man, 75 years; of age, named Horatio John Parkes, died somewhat suddenly at his house at the Roimata Settlement, Woolston. He had been unwell for fieveral days, and had been attended by Dr De Renzi. On Saturday he was too unwell to get up,, and in the .afternoon asked a man who was I attending on him for a cup of tea. When i the man took it he found that Parkes was at the point of death. It. is understood that Dr De Renzi -was prepared to give a certificate as to the cause of death. It will be remembered that in January, 1897, I Parkes killed a man named Michael Ryan, j who lived with him, by a blow from an axe. He was arrested, but the Coroner's jury returned a verdict of justifiable homicide, and the Grand Jury at the Supreme Court threw out the bill against him. Mr T. Wilson, whilst trying to cross the Hinds River, at Marnan, on Friday, was washed down the stream and out of the trap. He managed to swim to the bank, and the horse and^trap were washed ashore on a spit. An inquest was held before Mr Morgan, acting-coroner, at Lyndhurst, on Friday, touching the death of the infant daughter of W. Skilling. The medical evidence showed death to be due to inflammation, and a verdict was returned accordingly.
