Gold in the Upper Waihao.

Some four or five months a#o Mr H. W. Dunn, of Wairnafce, who holds n liconse to prospect all the land in the Upper Waihao, Hakateramea, and Studholme country, washed out some excellent gold from the bed and banks of the north branch of the Waihao river," some miles above the Forks, on the freehold of the late Mr M. Stndholme, Waimale. The gold was very pure and nuggety. Samples of the reefs in the locality were also taken, and Mr F. Sloe and Mr Clement, of Wai ui ate, had parcels of the different reefs sent to Melbourne, j where it has been tested. The assay was , conducted at the Metallurgical Works, i Hyde street, Footscray, Melbourne, and j the assayers report that tho gangue on i assay gives as follows: — The reef at old goldfield near the Gold lieserve, at Upper Waihao, silver per ton, 30/. 12dwts 2grs ; gold, 2dwts 19tfrs. The reef by the Black Swamp at the Waihao Forks gives — silver, loz 12dwts Ggrsper ton ; gold, Idwt lSgrs per ton. The result of the trial is considered so far satisfactory, and Mr Dunn, is further prospecting the country, *n<l intends to try his fortune sluicing on the banks and cradling on the river. Should a good field be the result of his prospecting it will cause a boom in Wainiato. There is easy access to the ground, and the distance from town is not great.
