r P HE employees of Messrs Ton- M. son Garlick ana Co.j Limited, heid their second winter social in the Federal Hall last Friday. About seventy couples were present, and a most enjoyable evening was spent. A word of praise is due to Mr J. Gibson for the able manner in which all,, arrangements were carried out. Benney, Railway-street, Parnell, with Mr W. H. Northmore, takes place at St. Matthew's Church, on Wednesday, November 13th, at 2 p.m. The engagement is announced of Miss A. M. Smith, eldest daughter of Mr E. D. Smith, of Mount Eden Road, and late "chief officer in the Canadian Pacific Company's service, to Mr A. E. Reynolds, schoolmaster Marlborough School, Northern Wairoa. * * • ■ The marriage of Miss Lizzie Potter, second daughter of Mr and Mrs Potter, of Hamilton, and Mr Valentine Masefield Houghton, youngest son of the late Mr Frank Houghton, formerly of Brighton, England, was solemnised on Wednesday, October 9th, in Holy Trinity Church, Hamilton. Many friends were present to witness the ceremony, which was performed by the Rev. Thos. Fee. The bride was given away by her father, and wore a beautiful dress of white crystaline silk, trimmed with silk embroidered insertion and lace. She also wore an embroidered tulle veil, over a coronet of orange blossoms, and carried a beautiful bouquet. Miss Winifred Houghton acted as bridesmaid, daintily frocked in white silk, and to her the bridegroom presented a pretty "greenstone .and gold bangle with locket attached. Mr C. R. Houghton acted as best man. The Wedding March was performed at the conclusion of the service by Miss Fee. A bridal party drove to Mrs Buins-SmithV

rooms, where a dainty afternoon tea was served, and the customary toasts duly honoured. Mr and Mrs Houghton~ departed for Cambridge, en route for Rotorua, the bride going away in a neat navy blue tailormade costume, and pretty hat. * * * The engagement is announced of •Mrs Leefe, widow of the late Mr H. E. Leefe, H.8.M., Resident Commissioner of Rotorua Island, and eldest daughter of the late Mr C. D. "Whitcombe, New Plymouth, to Mr Arthur Preston Cowie, youngest son of the late Bishop Cowie, Primate of New Zealand. * * * The engagement is announced of Miss Gladys Anderson, second daughter of Mrs Andrew Anderson, of Opawa, Christchurch, to Mr C. Ferrar, who was one of the members of the Discovery Antartic expedition. A quiet wedding was solemnised early on Wednesday morning, October 9th, in St. Luke's Church, Rotorua, when Miss M. Britton, of Hastings, Napier, was united with Mr A. M. M. Sims, of P'utaruru, formerly of Dunedin. The Rev. Mr Edzel, of Matamata "officiated. The bride was given away by Mr John Munro, and looked exceedingly well in a dainty frock of fine white muslin, and pretty pale blue hat. Miss 1). Britton attended as bridesmaid, attired in a pretty pale pink dress, and becoming hat. Mr D. McKay, of Helensvilie, acted as best man. Mr and Mrs Sims departed for Auckland and Waiwera, the bride travelling in a navy blue costume, and pretty burnt straw hat, trimmed witli green tulle and pink roses. The engagement is announced of .Miss M. H. Taylor, daughter of Mrs Taylor, "Highbury," Birkenhead, to Mr G. W. S. Robinson, solicitor, Auckland. * * * The engagement is announced of Miss Rosie Russell, daughter of Mr and Mrs A. S. Russell, of Sentinel Road, Ponsonby, to Mr Chas. Biggs, builder and contractor, of Tauranga. The engagement is just announced of Miss Mary Day, Otahuhu, to the Rev. C. Vaughan, of the Anglican Church, Qoromandel, and late curate in charge of the Otahuhu Church.
