DISASTROUS CYCLONE.
IMMENSE DAMAGE DCUNE.

Washington, August 31.
Reports to hand show that the cyclone in the Southern States was of exceptional severity, and the loss of life and property appalling. j After the hurricane a tidal wave arose and nearly swept away Port Royal, in South CarolinaOne hundred lives were lost. Storms are now raging along the coasts of Carolina, Georgia, and Florida.
It is believed at least 500 lives have been lost. It is also feared the warships Kear-, sage and Nantuoket have foundered.
Tremendous damage has been inflicted on the country all the way from .Richmond to Charleston.
The latter city is almost in ruins. Every church is destroyed.
. The cyclone did terrible havoc in Charleston, where seventy churches were injured.
The tidal wave which followed sabmerged the city, and has rendered thousands of people homeless.
Baltimore was flooded, and suffered heavily.
New York and New England states escaped serious damage.
The cyclone devastated the Atlantic seaboard from. Florida to New England.
The death list in killed and drowned is now swollen to 700.
Thijty shipwrecks are known so far Charleston is completely ruined. '
