CONDEMNATION OF A RAILWAY VIADUCT.

Operations have been going on for some

time in the construction of a railway from Arbroath. to Montrose to connect the North British system with Dundee and the-North of Scotland. . The new line is approaching completion. The principal engineering work is where the railway approaches Montrose by' a long bridge which spans the river South Esk. The v bridge iB of iron, and is* built on the "' laUioe-girder principle, from designs by tfie late Sir Thomas Bouch. Since the fall of the Tay Bridge there, have been rumours affecting the stability of the South Esk Viaduct. These rumours assumed so definite a form I hat tests were applied to the structure, with the result, it is said, that several of the piers sank considerably. Colonel Yolland - has inspected the line on behalf of the Board of Trade, and it ir, now reported that eight of the piers have been eon- ' dem'ned, and that their rectification and strengthening has -been entrusted to Messrs t <yalbreHh arid Churchill, C.E., London.',-A aiember of the firm has . arrived irf Montrose, and it. is expected - that'he.will prepare new plans, and that -these will be adopted to ensure the : stability of the bridge. In any event there will be coisiderable delay, and the '. opening of the new line will have to be postponed for some months.
