AN URGENT NECESSITY. Very shortly there would be a million cases of fruit annually for export from this district. This would require a million and a.quarter feet of amber each year for cases alone. All this would have to be transported over bho roads The Council, he said, should urgo upon tho Government the necessity of constructing a, railway in tho district in anticipation of the traffic. Leagues had been formed in Motueka and Riwaka to push the railway project, and the Motueka Borough 'Council had passed a resolution in regard to the matter, and had appointed delegates to proceed to Wellington to interview the Minister of Public Works during the present session. He moved that the Council pass v resolution urging the Government .to construct a railway through the district, and that the chairman and the mover join the deputation to Wellington. Cr. Drummond seconded the motion. Cr. Allport, in supporting the motion, considered that the scheme would be a profitable one. Without a railway it would be impossible to shift the fruit from the Moutere hills to Nelson, which was the only deep water port in the district. Cr. Hewet*son had under-estimated the quantity of fruit that would be available for export. Cr. Fry said that lie was surprised at the quantity of fruit that was being grown in tho lliwaka district. One grower alone required 8000 cases. The motion was carried niianimously _
