NGATIMOTI

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

A very successful little gathering in aid of Dr. Barnardo's Homes was held at Mr. Guthrie Beat-son's residence, Ngatimoti, on the sth inst. It took the form of a garden party, and was held on "The Peninsula Courts" adjoining Mr. Beatson's house. The courts ien.l themselves admirably to the occasion, and very early in the afternoon they became quite a picturesque scene of gaity and business. Mrs. Alex. Strachan, wno had been an indefatigable worker for the homes, as well ar> the instigator of an annual effort for them at Ngatimoti, is deserving of .very high praise for the happy and businesslike way in which all the arrangements were made, and carried out so successfully as to bring about the district's record takings, which leave a sum "of £44j clear to be Da id to the homes. This is an increase "of £16 over last year's takings, and it is particuj larly gratifying to know that each year there has been a financial increase.*

The younger members of the Young Helpers' League were all very busy iS various ways and their side-show, ''The Hottentot Wonders," added greatly to the fun. of the afternoon, as well as a little towards the takings. All the stalls were well laden, and most of them were emptied before the close. A strong band of local ladies did very good service as if born to it, and it is rather to be regretted that their talont as saleswomen is not called more into requisition.

Several .of the, local, gentlemen hap. done some very hard . work putting up tents, stalls, etc., and the thanks of the league are due to them, as well as to all others who helped. t Most of tie 200 people present were from Ngatimoti, Pokororo and Orinoco, but v Richmond, Riwaka and Thorpe 'Were' represented: ',; -.:■•; •

The energtic honorary secretary, Miss Jean Strachan, is not relinquishing her efforts, but is hoping shortly to give a lantern lecture on the work of the homes.
