MAPUA.
(From Our Own Correspondents.)
The port of Mapua has now been initiated as a fruit shipping centre, and regular shipments of strawberries are being passed over the wharf, the largest shippers of "the fruit being Messrs. Stafford Bros., who will from now on ship nearly a ton of strawberries weekly.
Owing to the amount of heavy cargo arriving for the Upper Moutere district by the weekly steamer, the work of repairing the old road from the port to Gardiner's corner is being done immediately. Later on this old road will be supplanted by a new road built by the Moutere Amalgamated Syndicate, and having a much easier grade. The Mapua to Motueka road is to be cleared from the port.to Ruby Bay, and a start on the work is anticipated as soon as the weather clears up. By Christmas time there will be a formed road from Mapua to Motueka, with the exception of a gap of unmade road through Mr. W. H. Stafford's property. Owing to the regular amount of shipping being effected by the Anchor Company, Mr. C: H. Weyergang. has been appointed their agent. Active- preparations are being made by the new bWne^s of' the sub^division of ituby-'•'Bay to get their holdings planted next. year.. Mr, Sasron, >surveyor, is at Ruby Bay doing the final work of the various orchard lands, and when finished will survey the seaside residential sites.
