THE HERO OF MAIWAND
(Received Sept. 7>, 10.40 p.m.) London, Sept. 5. ■Major-general Sir John It. Slade, the hero of Maiwand, is dead.
■Major General Sir John .Ramsay Slade. X.C.8., was bora in 1843. Ho joined the Royal Artillery in 18G1, tuid served through the Bazaar Valley expedition under Sir Fred. Maude, V.0., In the -Affirm campaign of 1879 he was an adjutant of artillery -under Sir Samuel Brown, Y.C. He also served through the second Afghan campaign in the following year, as .» captain of the Royal Horse Artillery, and commanded the- E Battery, 13 Brigade, at the battle of Maiwand. Ho was' present at tho siege and battle of Kandahar. In the.Transvaal .campaigu of 1881-S2, Sir John Slade served on tho staff of General Sir Thomas Baker. He was afterwards appointed military attache at Rome. He was attached to General Baldissera's staff in Abyssinia in 1896, as military attache, and advanced with the Italian troops to the relief of Adigrat. After holding various commands at Home for some years; Sir John Slado was appointed to the command of tho British troops te\ Egypt in 1903, relinquishing that post ■■in'loos.
