MR. J. C. BURFORD.

We regret to record the death of Mr James Cross Buriord, which occurred at noon on. Jan. 26. For the past, six years Mr Burford bud been a great sufferer, but with great fortitude and indomitable courage ho retained the active conduct of his business except for brief periods when laid aside by more severe attacks, ft is ooly ' a fortnight since the attack, which terminated fatally, took him from his business, and though bis critical condition was known to his relatives it was not anticipated that the end was so near, his- death coming unexpectedly in that sense. Born at Bury St. Edmunds in 1813, the late Mr Burford came to Nelson as a youth in the barque. Napier, landing here in 1860. He was a nephew of tne late Captain Cross, pilot and harbormaster, and displaying an aptitude for that class of work, his uncle placed him as shipping clerk with Mr Tbos. Cawtborn, with whom he worked for twelve years in the agency for the following companies: — Panama Company, Henderson and MoFarlane (the cir- ! cular^saw flag}, McMeckan, Blackwood and Company, and the Union Steam Ship Comppany. In this office Mr Burford gained a wide experience, and was well known in shipping circles from end to end of New Zealand. Later on Mr Burford entered into business for himself, and purchased the steamer Lady Barkly from Mr J. S. Cross, and he has been engaged in the Golden Bay trade ever since. It may also be 'mentioned that the steamer Tasman (since p'urchaaed by the Anchor Company) was built to his order. He also ran several sailing craft. He took a large interest in coalmining in the Golden Bay district, and was also enthusiastic in horticultural matters, being for. many years Secretary of the old Horticultural Society, and was one of the trustees of the present Society. He was also a Justice of the 'Peace. Mr Burford leaves a widow, two daughters (Mrs N. Hooper, of Gisborne. aod Miss Burford) and one sou (Mr (). F. Burford). i • 11 i«nininn»iM^^rM
