Born at Bury St. Edmunds in 1813, the late Mr Burford came to Nelson as a youth in the barque. Napier, landing here in 1860. He was a nephew of tne late Captain Cross, pilot and harbormaster, and displaying an aptitude for that class of work, his uncle placed him as shipping clerk with Mr Tbos. In this office Mr Burford gained a wide experience, and was well known in shipping circles from end to end of New Zealand. Later on Mr Burford entered into business for himself, and purchased the steamer Lady Barkly from Mr J. S. Cross, and he has been engaged in the Golden Bay trade ever since.
