NELSON DIOCESAN SYNOD.
Synod resumed yesterday, when the Ven Archdeacon Mules occupied the chair, and there were present 17 clergy and 21 laymen. After prayer the minutes were read and conformed, and also tho minutes of the special Synod were read and confirmed. Mr J. Holloway gave notice-to move, That j this Synod desires to place on record its disapproval of theatrical entertainments, comic [ concerts, and such like means, for in any way carrying on the work of the Church. The Bev L. Moore gave notice to movs, That the Bible in Schools Committee be reappointed for the ensuing year. The Hon J. W. Barnicoat moved, and Col: Baillie seconded, That tho sum accruing to the Synod through the interest charged on the Loan Fund being in excess of that paid to Lord Selborne, be temporarily transferred to the Synod Fund.— Agreed to. Mr Pierson's motion that the British and Foreign Bible Society be promoted and encouraged in all the leading towns of this Dio'cese, and that the clergy generally be ininstrueted to request their parishioners to take a special interest for the purpose of forwarding the welfare of that noble Society by placing in the hands of their officiating minister any contribution in aid of the Society, who will forward the same to the Treasurer of the Nelson auxiliary — after some discussion was withdrawn. Mr White asked leave to withdraw his motion that the Synod go into Committee on the Bill to constitute the parish of Blenheim, and it was- agreed that the matter be considered by the Standing Committee. Mr Tarrant moved, That the Synod requests the Diocesan Trust Board to appoint Mr John Greenwood a member of the Diocesan Trust, Mr A. Pitt a member of the Nelson Trust, and Mr Alfred Rutland Edwards a member of the Motueka Trust. — Carried. Colonel Branfill moved, and Eev Lorenzo Moore seconded, That this Synod, recognising the extreme importance of the re-introduction of the Bible into the Government Schools of this Colony, instruct the members elected to attend the General Synod in February next, to bring the subject before that body with a view to some action being taken in the matter, and that the Standing Committee be requested to appoint one of the members eo elected to carry this out. On the motion of the Acting President, seconded by Mr J. S. Browning, this was amended as follows : That this Synod hopes that the General Synod may be induced to take some steps to bring about the introduction of Bible reading into the Government schools of this Colony, and that our representative be requested to bring this resolution before that body.— Agreed to. The Hon Col Baillie moved, and Archdeacon Grace seconded, That the names of Edmund Paul, Esq, of Spring Creek, Charles Houghton Mills, Esq., of Havelock, and John Abraham Roberts Greensill, Esq, of Pieton, be added to the roll of the Wairau Trustees. The Hon Col Baillie moved, and Mr Tarrant seconded, That with reference to the resolution No 5 carried on the 17th December, 1888 in the first session of the 14th Synod of this Diocese, in connection with Blenheim Parsonage, that the future sole control of tho said land and parsonage (known as the Weld street Parsonage) be in the hands of tho Wairau Trustees ; which was ultimately with ■ drawn.
