PROSPECTS OF THE AUSTRALIAN HARVEST.
A CHANGE for the worse appears to have taken place in the prospects of the Australian harvest. By telegram we learn that a very serious drought prevails in Victoria and New South Wales, a state of affairs which must be exceedingly disheartening to agriculturists. Last year they suffered very seriously from the same cause, and should the existing drought continue for-any length of time it will therefore be doubly unfortunate. While sympathising with those who are likely to suffer, we oannot but remind oar readers that the effect on the New Zealand grain market will be of a most important character. A bad harrest in Australia will tend more, even' than a similar occurrencs in England or America to increase the price of gnim in New Zealand. The prospect is therefore encouraging to farmers in all parts of the Colony.— Canterbury Times.
