DISASTROUS FIRE AT BRISBANE, QUEENSLAND.
The telegraphic intelligence of Sydney Empire contains the following: ? A great fire broke out in Brisbane at 3 o'clock, this morning, (Monday, 11th April) and burned down- the half of Queen-street. It extended three hundred yards in length, from one end of the street to the other, and the estimated loss is about £5O 3 000. It originated in Mr. Fegan's'grocery store, but it is not known how it began. The effect of ithasbeento put a stop to business altogether. The names of the sufferers by the fire are as follows:—Mr. Fegan, grocer ; Mr. Jost, butcher; Mr. Berkley, chemist; North Brisbane Hotel proprietor ; Prazer and Buckland, auctioneers ; Mr. Illidge, barber; Mr. Kingsford, draper ; Mr. Bulcock, fruiterer; Mr. Mandell, jeweller ; Mr-Leek, photographer ; Mr. Wilson, accountant ; Mr. Macalißter, attorney; Mr Chambers surveyor; Mr. Plavelle, jeweller and goldsmith; Mr. Doyle, attorney; Mr. M'Davitt, barrister; Greville and Bird; Mr. Keith, ironmonger; Mr. Coates, crockery merchant ; Mr. Cowlishaw, architect; Mr. Maxwell, ironmonger. Three attorneys and two other barristers were also burnt out. Mr Maxwell and Mr. Mavelle suffered great loss.
The correspondent of the Sydney Herald in his telegram states:—The loss is variously estimated at from £20,000 to £30,000, a large portion of which will be covered by insurance. The largest amount is insured in the Queensland Company, as nearly as can be ascertained. The Pacific Company, it is said loae* about £2600; Sydney Insurance Company, £2500 ; the TJuited, £2000 • and the Northern £2000.
The buildings were principally of wood, and the supply of water too limited to subdue the flames.
A dangerous rock is reported near King George's Sound. Vessels are warned to keep one mile and a half from the western end of Michael's Island.
