HERNIA.
This is the medical name for a rapture. This may occur in infancy or later in life. As a rule ruptures are situated in men in the lower part of the groin, while in women it occurs in the inner and upper paTt of the thigh. In children its usual seat is ' the navel. Children are sometimes born with a rupture. The rupture itself is caused by some injury which allows the bowel to slip through the walls of the abdomen and a swelling under the skin appears. The swelling may be quite small or vtry large, and feels elastic and doughy to the touch. It may appear suddenly or very gradually. Any soft protruding swelling should receive the doctor's attention at once as the only radical cure is by operation.' This operation is not dangerous but it is as well to have it performed by a skilful surgeon. The great danger from rupture lies in the fact that the protruding bowel is liable to become strangulated, and in this case an operation would have to be performed at once to save the patient's life. When anyone, suffering from ruptut ., feels a severe pain at the seat of the swelling, with a complete bowel stoppage and vomiting, no time should be lost in sending for a doctor. Tims is of value, and no amount of home doctoring can do any good, and only decreases the patient's chances of recovery. Where trusses are worn they should always be made to i measure, and by a doctor's advice. It is an absolute waste of money to buy a ready-made truss, as an " ill-fitting truss is nor only uncomfortable but dangerous, frequently causing strangulation. Prevention. In children rupture is frequently caused by violently crying or screaming. Mothers should never let a child cry violently especially if the child or delicate, as the walls which enclose the intestines are not so strong in a delicate child as they should be. In adults a fruitful cause of rupture is a strain of any sort—' the sudden lifting, especially if this is *e^ ith a jerk ' >oi a heavy weight. A sudden slip-ending with a jerk will also induce a rupture, as will also a sudden violent twisting of the body. When there is any sensation of weakness m the walls of the-abdomen any lilting of heavy weights - should be done padually, taking extreme care nofety jerk the body muscles undul j 260
