AND TIME, TOO!
He was one of those barristers with a bossy way that is highly successful with the modest, retiring kind of witness. As he looked at the meek little man about to be cross-examined, a wave of joy swept over him. Here was a victim after his own heart!
Coughing in his best professional manner, he glared at the little man, and commenced. •
"Now, sir," he said fiercely, "an hon-. est man has nothing to fear in this court, so that it rests entirely with yourself what kind of impression you leave with the jury." He paused and glanced at his papers. "The first question I have to ask you is: Have you ever been a bankrupt?"
"No."
"I really must warn you to be careful, sir. Do you mean to say that you have never at any time in your career stopped payment?"..
"No."
"Ah, I thought you would reconsider that statement! Now, will you please tell the jury when it was that you did stop payment?"
""When I had paid everybody, ol
course!"
