CALLANT LIFEBOAT RESCOE.
LONDON, November 18. The full details of the lifeboat rescues m Padstow harbor, Cornwall, on Sunday furnish a narrative of gallant conduct by a volunteer crew. Two sailing vessels were seen approaching tho harbor at 4 o'clock on Sunday afternoon, when a fierce gale was blowing. Rockets were discharged, and the residents of Hawker's Cove launched the lifeboat Arab before .the crew had arrived from Padstow. Immediately the boat was manned it went out to the rescue and got alongside the schooner Isabel Maid, rwhich, with sails torn to tatters, had struck the Doom Bar. After several fallant attempts the crew of five of the sland Maid wore rescued and taken ashore. In the meantime the other vessel, with her sails all gone^ had struck the bar. She was the brigantine Angele, of Brest. "Now then, chaps, for the other !" said Coxswain W. Baker, of the lifeboat, when the Island Maid's crew were landed. The Arab put out to the rescue of the Angeles crew, but at 6.30 the lifeboat returned, the men declaring it was impossible to reach the doomed vessel. Coxswain Baker, however, determined to make another attempt and set about getting together a volunteer crew. While he was doing this the steam lifeboat Helen Peele had her searchlight on the wreck, but was unable to cross the shallow, broken water to reach the Doom Bar. The hull of the Angele was under water. Her crew could.be seen m the rigging, but nothing . could be done to assist them. At 8 o'clock, however, the volunteer crew of the Arab was complete, and she set out again. The Arab reached. the Angele and rescued the captain, named Lazac, from the rigging. The other four members of the crew had taken to their boat, but they were drowned, and their bodies were washed ashore.
