ACTRESS AS TOMBSTONE ANGEL

MISS MAUD JEFFRIES AS A CEMETERY FASHION. The London Daily Mail of December 28, to hand by the Frisco mail last night, states: — Uf late the demand for a less depressing type of cemetery memorial statues has become so emphatic that the "weeping angel" has practically disappeared into the limbo populated by the skull and crossbones and the fat cherub. The head of the largest English firm dealing m memorial statuaxy said yesterday : "A less gloomy, but still dignified, type of figure is vow popular. We have quarries and studios m Italy, where our statues are executed, but the ideas for them come from England, and English taste is of necessity consulted. Wing, ed angels, though more expensive, are fashionable at present, and the public are now paying more for their cemetery statues than ever." A Daily Mail representative was conducted round a stoi'e room where marble angels of all shapes and sizes lay m ■wooden cpffin-like boxes, protected "by a gauze veil. "You will see," continued the speaker, "that they symbolise hope rather than regret. "Frequently we have special orders involving special models and designs. Wo recently had this photograph of Miss Maud Jeffries m 'The Sign, of the Cross" handed to -u s with instructions to r»it>« lino head a triile, but otherwise to follow it. Here is the result." The photograph was a popular one, representing Mi^s Jeffries m classical costume holding a loug wooden cross and a lantern. . The marble duplicate is* quite a recognisable likeness, and the popular actressY representation makes an excellent memorial statue. '
