THE LATE MR HUGH GOURLEY.
The death of Mr Hugh Goorley hat removed a figure which was well and popularly known m racing cirelee for very many years past. Mr Gourley has held office as steward of the Dunedin Jockey Club, and acted as president oi the Forbury Park Racing Club since its formation sons* lour years ago. fiuence over both racing and trotting was such ..that anyone taking a genuine interest in those sports will sincerely regret his death. When actively engaged in bis official capacity in racing and trotting the late Mr Gourley was genial and conscientious in carrying out any duty he undertook to fulfil, and his identification with sport was calculated to uphold the prestige of racing. Many old-time sports will remember when Kildare carried Mr Gourley's brothers, and was one of the popular performers of the day. Kildare raced successfully over hurdles and steeplechase country, but finally met with a fatal accident whilst competing in a jumping competition at a local agricultural show, which was held at Forbury Park. Mr Gourley leaves three sons; and one of them, in Mr H. J. Gourley, was formerly known as a very capable gentleman rider, and bow acts as handicapper for several clubs. Another son, Mr S Gourley, was fatally wounded during the South African war. ; ! | |
