LORD HOPETOUN'S RESIGNATION.

. .«. MELBOURNE, May 21. It is stated that all cables sent by Lord Hopetoun in reference to his resigning were not laid on the table of the House when the resignation was announced. It is understood that Lord Hopetoun suggested to Mr Chamberlain to appoint a commission to inquire into the matter, and it is further presumed that this would refer to the constitutional aspect rather than to that of salary, which is fixed by the Constitution. Since , Parliament dealt with allowances, the Government propose in future to limit them to the maintenance of the Government Houses in Melbourne and Sydney at a cost of £5950, and to allow tho Executive the use of the express, all telegrams and telephones, to the amount of .1:2250, making a total, with salary, of £18,200. The Government intend to ask Parliament for a, further grant of £5000 to cover the cost of Lord Hopetoun's lighting, postage, printing, and fuel from January, 1901, to May this year. May 22. Mr Chamberlain's despatches dealing with the Governor-General's .allowances were laid on the table of the Senate. Mr Chamberlain affirms that, taking into consideration the relative magnitude and importance of the duties of the Governors-General of Canada and Australia, the latter's probably were the more arduous, and would entail more expense. It was of the highest importance that the salaries of colonial Governors should be adequate without having to be supplemented from their private resources. Mr Chamberlain also points out that Canada allows 30,000 dollars in addition to the salary. May 24. Lady Hopetoun leaves in June owing to the doctor ordering an immediate sea trip for her youngest son. j SYDNEY, May 24. [ Lord Hopetoun has informed the Lieutenant-Governor that the statement in the Manchester Guardian about local Governors interfering with the Governor- General is not worth contradicting. j
