THE NORTH LYELL.

The new steamer North Lyell, which was recently purchased by the Union Steamship Company, is 300 ft long, 40.6 ft wide, and 14.6 ft deep, with a tonnage of 2070. She was built "by Sir W. G. Armstrong, Whitworth, and Co., at Newcastle, England, launched a few months ago, and is dve — probably at Hobart — in about a couple of weeks. Her engines are hy Wigham, Richardson, and Co., of Newcastle. Her propelling machinery consists of two sets of 4-crank triple-expansion engines, balanced on the Yarrow, Schlick, and Tweady eystem, each set driving a three-bladed bronze propeller, made of a special mixture, so as to reduce the surface friction of the blades to a minimum. The boilers are designed for a .working pressure of 1801b, and are arranged to work under forced draught on Howden's system. The machinery will be capable of propelling the vessel when fully loaded at a regular speed of 14 knots.
