SIR GEORGE ALFRED ARNEY.
fIR GEORGE ALFRED ARNEY, who administered the Government for three months in 1873, between the departure of Sir George Bowen and the arrival of Sir James Fergusson, was born at Salisbury in 1806. He was educated at Winchester and Oxford, and in 1834 entered Lincoln's
Inn, practising in the western circuit. He was made recorder of Winchester, which he held until his appointment as Chief Justice of New Zealand in 1857, to succeed the first Chief Justice Mr— afterwards Sir William — Martin. He arrived at Auckland in the beginning of 1858, and discharged his judicial duties until his retirement in 1875. He held a seat in the Legislative Council for some years. He died in England in April, 1883. His brother was Major Arney, of the 58th Regiment, who took part in the New Zealand war in 1846. • • •
