The winner started the outsider of the party at 100 to S. Gulliver started at even money, and made a good race of it, but he failed to quite gat up, and was defeated by a neck.

Won in a canter by about two lengths. THE NEW RULES OP RACING. The following list contains the new rules adopted by the Wellington Conference, and also shows the alterations in other rules, Tha alterations are marked in italics : — INTERPRETATION AND APPLICATION OF THESE RULES. 1. "Jockey Club" means any of the following clubs, which are the metropolitan clubs of New Zealand, and have jurisdiction over all race meetings held in the districts set after their names respectively :— Auckland Racing Club for the provincial district of Auckland, Hawke's Bay Jockey Club for the provincial district of Hawke'e Bay, TaranakJ Jockey Club for the provincial district of Taranaki, Wanganui Jockey Club for the provincial district of Wellington to the north of the- Mauawatu river, Wellington Racing Club for the provincial district of Wellington to the south and east of the Manawatu river, Nelson Jockey Club for the Nelson provincial di6trict, Maryborough Racing Club for the Marlborough provincial district, Greymouth Jockey Club for the Westland provincial district, Canterbury Jockey Club south of the Hurunul river and north of the Waitaki river, and the Dunedin Jockey Club south of|the Waitaki river. 2. "Race" includes plate, match, sweepotake, steeplechase, or hurdle race.

4. A "maiden" means a horse which has never won an advertised plate or sweepstakes on the flat. A maiden hurdle or steeplechase horse is one who has never won an advertised hurdle race or steeplechase. A maiden means a maiden at time of start. Vide Rule 50.

9. " Advertised " means published in a newspaper, 11. " Official Calendar " means the publication for the time being appointed by the Jockey Club for advertising matters required by these rules to be advertised. Publication in the Official Calendar by authority of the Jockey Club shall be deemed to be full notice throughout the colony of all matters and things so published. MANAGEMENT OF MEETINGS AND TOWERS OF STEWARDS. 16. The programme of every meeting [must be advertised. 17. The programme of each meeting in which the added money is £100 or upwards must be advertised in full once at least in the Official Calendar. The advertisement shall show that the programme has been. approved by the Jockey Club, shall state the days on which the meeting Is ito begin and end, and the names of the stewards, judge, starter, clerk of the scales, and handicapper.

20. All race meetings held in the districts comprised in Rule 1 shall be run under these rules. If a horse runs in a race at any meeting within such district which is not held under these rules, such horse shall be permanently disqualified from running, and the owner, nominator, trainer and jockey of any such horse from owning, 'nominating, training, or riding at or for any race meeting held under these rules, unless the committee of the Jockey Club see just and sufficient reason to remove such disqualification. 21 . Not more than one club shall be allowed to hold meetings on any racecourse except by special license from the Jockey Club.

22. The full programme of every race meeting, run under their rules, shall prior to its being advertised be forwarded in duplicate to and receive the approval of the committee of the Jockey Cub, and such committee may at their discretion decline to approve any such programme unless altered as they recommend — (i) The programme when submitted shall be accompanied, if required, by a properly audited balance sheet, showing the receipts and expenditure of the club for the past year, and in no case shall any programme be passed unless it clearly appears from the balance sheet that all moneys received by the club have been expended in stakes, making improvements to the course and stands, or payment for interest and sinking fund on purchase money, or generally in the interest of racing, (ii) No club shall be allowed to hold more than five meetings in the year. (iii) Any club holding more than three meetings in the year must give an average of at least £500 per diem in stakes. (Iv) Any club holding three meetings in the year mußt give an average of at least £400 per diem in stakea. (v) Any club holding two meetings in tho year must give an average of at least £200 per diem in Btakes, (vi) Any cltjb holding one meeting in the year must give a sum of not less than £100 per diem in stakes. (vli) Subject to the foregoing rules and tho Rule 3 of Racing there shall be no restriction as to the amount of money added by any club holding meetings at which the totalisator is not used.

23. Tbe powers of the stewards continue aftei the meeting for all purposes relating to disputes, objections, penalties, and disqualifications, and all questions arising under Rule 20. GENERAL CONDITIONS AND RESTRICTIONS.

38. No horse shall carry leas than6st in any handicap on the flat, or 9st in any handicap hurdle race, or 9st 7lb in any handicap steeplechase. 39. At any meeting held on any date from the 31st of May to the Ist of September, the lowest weight in any race on the flat shall not be leas than lOat. 43. In all cases where penalties have to be carried for winning, it shall be the duty of the owner, traioer, or jockey, to notify the same to the secretary, when possible, 2/ f hours beforethe race, or in any case half an hour pr''o>- to the dnrf. Any />"rson neglecting to comply with tkis rue shall pay n fine to be imposed by xhe stewards, not exceeding osori. 4G. In calculating peuaMes, the value- of a race shall, unless othenuise specified, be taken to be the amount actually payable to the winner. 50. Conditions referring to maiden allowances shall mean maidens at the time of the start unless specially provided for to the contrary. ENTRY AND SDBSOEIPTIONS FOR HACES.

65. If a horse's name be changed, except as nforesaid, the owner shall pay a fee of £b to the Jockey Club, and shall notify tb* alteration to the secretary, who shall give an acknowledgment In writing of the receipt of auoh notification. Such notification and payment shall be made only to the recognised cluba of each provincial district, and shall be published in the Official Calendar, lb ehallj be qeeeasary to give the old name or names, aa well as the new name, In every nomination for 12 months from the date of such acknowledgment, or until the horae shall have run on the course in its new name. 66. No assumed name of an owner shall be used in

ty subscription or entry unless such assumed name duly registered as follows :— (i) The person intending to use an assumed name must register it annually at the registry office. A registration continues effectual during the current racing year. „. ■ (ii) A person cannot have more than one assumed name registered at the same time, nor oan he use his real name in any subscription or entry so long as he has a registered assumed name. (iii) An assumed name may be changed afc any time by registering a new assumed name. (iv) A person cannot register as his assumed name a name which has been already registered by any other person, or the real name of any other person who runs horses in race 3 in such other person's real name. (v) On every registration or change of an assumed name, there must be paid at the registry office, to the credit of the club, a fee of one guinea, and suck registration or change of name shall ba published in the Official Calendar. THE EACH. WEIGHING OUT. 90. If a jookey intend to carry overweight exceeding by more than 21b in a flat race, or Idb in a hurdle race or steeplechase, the weight at which bis horse is to run, he must declare the amount of such overweight. The declaration must be made to the dark of the scales at the time of weighing, and the clerk shall exhibit the amount of ouch extra weight with the number of the horse.

91. If a horse carry more than 21b overweight in a flat race, or lib in a hurdle race or steeplechase, which has not been duly declared, he is disqualified, unless the stewards be satisfied that such excess of weight has been caused by an error, wet weather, or other unavoidable cause.

92. Any overweight exceeding 21b which baa been carried, whether it has been duly declared, or the horse has been disqualified, as provided in Bides 90 and 91, shall be published, and the clerk of the scales shall send a return thereof to the registry office. STARTING. 06. The horses shall (so far as is practicable) be drawn up before the start in an order reckoned from the inside of the course, to be determined when the stewards think fit, by lota to be drawn by the jockeys at the time of weighing out. BUNNIKG. 107. When only one horse appears for a match or sweepstakes he must walk over, except by leave of tbe stewards, except that in a hurdle race or steeplechase it shall be sufficient if the horse 6 s weighed out and proceed to the starting post, when he shall be considered the winner of the race. But in the division after a dead heat it shall not be necessary for a horse to walk over. 108. When a sum of money given from the race fend (whether added to a sweepstake or not) be walked over for only half the amount shall be paid, notwithstanding any rule which may be read to the contrary, but the full amount shall be paid in all eases where two or more horses shall stairt. 109. No race shall exceed 20 minutea in duration, and at the expiration of that time from the start the judge shall leave the box, and no horse which shall subsequently pass the post shall bo entitled to any portion of the prize. WEIGHING IN. 110. Every jockey shall, immediately after pulling up, ride his horse to the place of weighing, and on being ordered to do so by a Steward shall immediately dismount and be weighed by the clerk of the scales provided that, if a jockey be prevented from riding to the place of weighing by reason of accident or illness, by which he or his horse is disabled, he may walk or be carried to the scales. 111. If a jockey do not weigh In, or be short of weight, or be guilty of any fraudulent practice with respect to weight or weighing, or dismount before reaching the place oi weighing or touch (except accidentally) any person or thiug other than his own equipments, before weighing in, his horse shall be disqualified, unless he can satisfy the stewards that he was justified by extraordinary circumstances. 114. The clerk of the scales shall, in addition to the correct weight, put into the scales Sib in a flat race or lilb in a hurdle race or steeplechase before passing the jockey's weight as correct. OBJECTIONS AND COMPLAINTS. 128. All complaints regarding the riding of any jookey, or regarding any matter occurring bctwun the time the horses are placed in the starter's hands and the weighing in must be made within 16 minutes after, the first horse passes the post either by the owner, jockey, trainer, or starter, to the secretary, one of the stewards, or the clerk of the scales before' the jockey of the horse whose owner, trainer or kockey prefers the complaint, is weighed. SELLING BAOES. 144. Any horse running in any race " to be sold," shall, if the winner, be sold by auction as soon as possible after the race, and the surplus over the aelling price shall be divided equally between the owner of the second horse and the race fund of the meeting, unless otherwise provided for in the programme by the special permission of the Jockey Club. Ii sold, the horse shall not leave the place of sale until authorised by the stewards to do so; and if the horse be not paid for, or the stewards satisfied with the security, within a quarter of an hour, they may order the horse to be put up a second time, and the purchaser at the first sale shall be responsible for any deficiency arising from the second sale, and shall be considered a defaulter until it is paid for. COEEUPT PEACTIOES AHD DISQUALIFICATIONS.

154. If any person corruptly give or offer any | money, share in a bet, or other benefit to any person having official duties in relation to a race, or to any jockey; or (i) Ii any person having official duties in relation to a race, or if any jockey corruptly accept or offer to accept any money, share in a bet, or other benefit ; or (ii) If any person wilfully enter, or cause to be entered, or to start for any race, a horse which he knows to be disqualified ; or (iii) If any owner, trainer, or other person ohall be proved to the satisfaction of the committee of the Jockey Club to have tampered with any boy in another stable, or to have obtained surreptitiously information respecting a trial from any person or persons engaged in it or in the service of tho owner or, trainer of the horses tried, or respecting any horse in training from any person in such service; or (iv) If any person lay, or any person accept, wagers to be determined by the amount of dividend paid by the totalisator ; or (v) If any person in the opinion of the stewards or committee, be guilty of any other corrupt or fraudulent practices on the turf in this or any other country ; Every person so offending may be warned off the course and other places where these rules are in force. 155. When a person is warned off the course uud ' these rules, so long as hia exclusion continues, he shall not be qualified, whether acting as an agent or otherwise, to subscribe for or to enter or run auy horse for any race either in hia own name or In that of any other person, and any horse of which he is wholly or partly the owner, or which, after the fact of his being warned off has been published in the Official Calendar or posted in the clubrooms, shall be proved to the satisfaction of the stewards to be under his care, training, management, or superintendence, shall be disqualified. 156. Notice of qualifications received from other clubs shall be dealt with by the committee. (i) All disqualifications or suspensions made by any, jockey club shall forthwith take effect throughout the colony. (ii) All disqualifications for fradulent practice made by the Jockey Club, or country disqualifications endorsed by the Jockey Oiub shall be published in the Official Calendar. £iii) All disqualifications made by country club 3 shall, together with copy of evidence taken and resolutions passed, be forwarded to the Jockey Club. (iv) No disqtcalification or suspension by a country club shall operate on any course except its own until indorsed by the Jockey Club.

158. If any person be reported by the committee of TattersaH's as being a defaulter in bets, he sha"A be disqualified, as in tbe last rule mentioned, until his default is cleared ; and the stewards shall have power to warn such defaulter off the course and euclosures. COLOUBS. 175. A book shall be kept in which owners can rpgister their colours upon payment of dBl Is, and every owner so registering has the solo right to those colours. A list of colours so registered shall be published n the Official Calendar. Colours worn by the riders are required to be named at the time of general entry under a peaalty of £2, unless' the colours of the owner of the horse entered be duly registered. In the event of two or more persons declaring the same colours &t the time of general entry, the stewards or committee are empowered to decide who shall retain the eald colours, and to direct the other person or persona to assume other colours.

176. No two or more' horses will be allowed to start. in any race in the same colours. Any jockey riding except in the colours entered will ba fined 3sovs. When two or more horses start, the property of the same owner, a distinguishing colour must be worn. Any person neglecting this rule to be fined 2sovs. GENTLEMEN EIDERS. ( 177. (i) Applications, which must ba made annually, for election as a gentleman rider shall be made to the committee of the Jockey Club in whose district the applicant resides, and must be proponed and seconded in writing by members of the club. On election the committee shall issue a certificate which shall entitle the holder to ride as a gentleman rider on any racecourse where these rules are in force. Provided that the certificate may be cancelled at any time on sufficient cause being shown. , ' ' > (II) No person having received payment in consideration of work performed in connection with the training or riding of horses shall be eligible to ride as a gentleman rider. i HUEDLE RACES AND STEEPLECHASES!, 180. No horse shall be allowed to rnn under four years of age for a steeplechase, nor . for a hurdle race until he is three years and six months old. ; 181. Any rider in a steeplechase where the ground is not flagged out, opening any gste or wickets or passing through sny gateway or common passage from one enclosure to another, vrill disqualify his horso from winning although he should come in first. , 183. Any horse getting away from his rider may be remounted in any part of the same field or enclosure in which the occurrence took place ; but shduld such horse not be caught until he shall have entered another field, then he shall be ridden or brought back to the one in which he parted from his rider. Any jockey so losing his horse may be assisted in catching him and remounting him without risk of disqualification ; and in the event of a rider being disabled his horse may be ridden home by any person of sufficient weight, provided he be qualified according to the conditions of the race. ;No penalty shall be exacted for carrying overweight in this instance. '

183. If any flag, post, or boundary mark be placed in the course -no matter by whose order— after' the riders have been shown over the ground, or had; the line of country pointed out or explained to them, it shall not be considered binding or of any effect unless such alteration or addition shall have been particularly named previous to starting to all the jockeys about to ride in the race by one of the stewards, aeoretary, or by their representatives. 184. If a horse refuse any fence in a steeplechase, and it can be proved to tbe satisfaction of the stewards that he has been led over a fence by any of the bystanders, or has been given a lead over by any horseman not riding in the race, the horse shall be disqualified from winning although he comes in first.

185. The following shall be the scale of weight-for-age for steeplechases :— From the Ist of August to 31st of January, both inclusive : 4yrs 6yra 6yrs and aged lOst 31b list 81b 12at 3lb. From the Ist of February to 31st of July, both inclusive i 4yrs syrs 6yrß and aged list list 121b 12st 31b. For steeplechases of less than three miles :— From tbe Ut> of August to 31st of January, both Inclusive : 4yrs Eyrs (Syrs and aged lOat 101b list 101b 12st 31b. From the Ist of February to 31st of July, both inclusive : 4yrs syre 6jrs and aged list 61b 12st 12st31b. ' For hurdle races :— From the Ist of August to 31st of January, both inclusive : 4yrs 6yrs 6yrs and aged list list 101b 12st. From the Ist of February to 31st of July, both inclusive ; 3yrs 4yrs Syrs, 6yra, and aged lOst 71b list 121b - 12st 31b. , COMMENCEMENT. OF BULBS. 186. These rules shall come into operation on tho Ist day of October 1889, and any other rules of racing shall be annulled as from that day, without prejudice to the then existing rights and liabilities.
